<image:caption>Pianist Avedis Manoogian grew up in a uniquely creative household: his parents—violin virtuoso Vartan Manoogian and the imaginative visual artist Brigitte Manoogian—instilled both technical rigor and artistic curiosity from an early age. The family moved to Madison when Avedis was a child, coinciding with Vartan’s appointment to the UW School of Music after serving on the faculty at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Avedis began his formal musical training with pianist and John Cage scholar Ellsworth Snyder, and went on to study at the University of Wisconsin–Madison with Caroll Chilton and Howard Karp, followed by advanced work in Minneapolis with Margot Garrett. After his studies, he spent several years in Cincinnati, where he became an integral part of the city’s performing arts scene. He performed for ballet companies, contemporary dance studios, and theater productions, and collaborated widely with composers, chamber ensembles, and improvisers. He also served as rehearsal pianist, accompanist, and musical director, honing a versatility and sensitivity that would define his approach to collaborative work. With his recent return to Madison, Avedis teaches at Muso and pursues inventive collaborations, including projects with legendary Roscoe Mitchell, founder of the avant garde Art Ensemble of Chicago. His work continues to explore the intersections of jazz, cabaret, and improvisatory chamber music, bringing a lifetime of experience in both classical and experimental traditions to every performance.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Fragments of Time: Present Music / The Violins of Hope</image:title>
<image:caption>At the outbreak of World War II, Olivier Messiaen was drafted into the French army, captured and imprisoned at Stalag VIII-A. There he discovered among his fellow prisoners a violinist, cellist, and clarinetist, as well as a sympathetic guard who supplied him with music paper and pencils. There he wrote Quartet For the End of Time, one of the acknowledged masterpieces of the 20th Century. It was first performed in January 1941 to an audience of prisoners and prison guards, with the composer playing a poorly maintained upright piano in freezing conditions, and the trio playing third-hand unkempt instruments. The fifth movement, Louange à l’Éternité de Jésus, is scored for cello and piano. Some melodic fragments come from a prior 1937 piece for 6 Ondes Martenot, written for a Paris Expo to accompany water fountains and fireworks. The tempo is marked “infinitely slow”, and magnifies with love and reverence the eternity of the Word, stretching majestically into a kind of gentle, regal distance in which time nearly comes to a standstill, achieving an almost spiritual dimension.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Fragments of Time: Present Music / The Violins of Hope - THE VIOLINS OF HOPE</image:title>
<image:caption>VIOLINS OF HOPE is private collection of violins, violas and cellos, all collected since the end of World War II. Many of the instruments belonged to Jews before and during the war. Many were donated by or bought from survivors; some arrived through family members and many simply carry Stars of David as decoration. Weaving a tapestry throughout our community, the Violins of Hope-Wisconsin residency will tell stories of instruments from the Holocaust, and the musicians who played them. As the Violins of Hope website says: “Remember me, remember us. Life is good, celebrate it for those who perished, for those who survived. For all people.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The great string trios may be counted on the fingers of one hand, and Harbison's model was the greatest of all, Mozart's Divertimento in E flat, K563. Like that work, Harbison's Trio is in six movements, but their thematic material is derived from musical spellings of Lionel Messi's name (he is, says Harbison, the "Mozart of soccer")… Harbison’s Trio is wonderfully elegant and clear, and seems a major addition to the string trio repertory.” —Andrew Clements, The Guardian 9.26.2014</image:caption>

<image:caption>Whether with orchestra, chamber group, or with piano, Harbison’s songs have attracted expansive praise from many of our best music commentators, writing to his deep engagement across a vast array of texts: John Harbison has been bringing radiant and illuminating music to the written word with powerful and unforgettable results for his entire career. — Lloyd Schwartz Harbison's music is astonishingly responsive to each word and image in the text, often with very literal text-painting, but it also catches the whole, sometimes even before the singer has sung a word. The “accompaniment”– whether piano or chamber group or orchestra – is equal partner with the singer and poet, often introducing or commenting on the emotional content of the text. — David St. George</image:caption>
